How to make maggots float!

Floating maggots are an extremely effective bait, especially in the warmer months which are fast approaching!!! They can be fished on the surface to take surface feeding fish like carp, dace, bleak, roach and chub etc.

For the best results be sure the bait is fresh and not more than three days old!
Here's how to do it....

1. Put roughly 6mm of water into a bait pot making sure it just covers the bottom. carbonated drinks such as cola can also be used instead of water. I think this gives the maggots a sweeter taste which fish love!!

2. Add a hand full of maggots. then put the lid on so they can't crawl out!
I find cutting a portion of the centre out of an old bait lid is a great way to keep them in the container,  whilst also making it easier to grab some!
Don't worry, when they crawl to the open lip, they just fall straight back in lol!

3. I usually leave them to soak for 20 minutes in water,  or 10 minutes in carbonated drinks e.g. cola as the maggots absorb the gas from the drink quicker than they do water!!
That's it! Easy to prepare and very effective. give it a go, you will be surprised!

How To Prepare The Mighty Hemp Seed!!!!

We all know where hemp comes from, so why do fish love it? This remains a mystery, all we know is it works time after time in mostly all conditions. So how do you prepare RAW hempseed?
Here is a guide for preparing raw hempseed.. Hope this helps.....

How to Prepare Hempseed for Fishing
Hempseed is one of the most universally successful coarse fishing baits, accounting for many specimen Carp, Barbel, Tench, Chub and Roach. However, before it can be used it must be carefully prepared, so as not to harm the fish when eaten.

Steps

  1. Uncooked hempseed can be purchased from all leading fishing tackle shops and pet stores.
  2. Using a large saucepan, add one large cup of uncooked hempseed to four cups of water.
  3. Take care not to overfill the pan. Hempseed floats in its uncooked state and is prone to boiling over.
  4. Add a small teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to the pan. This will turn the hempseed a dark black colour, making it easier to see when the seeds are cooked correctly.
  5. Bring the pan to the boil.
  6. Continue boiling the hempseed for thirty minutes.
  7. When cooked correctly the seeds will split open, exposing a small white shoot.
  8. Remove from the heat and pour the contents into a strainer.
  9. Run the hempseed under cold water for two minutes to stop any further cooking.
  10. Bag up the hempseed and freeze until your next fishing trip.

Tips

  • Never use the wife's best saucepan and remember to open a window. Hempseed has a very pungent odour during the cooking process.
  • Do not pour away the water when finished. Instead bottle it and take it to the waterside for adding to groundbait, to give it an extra attraction to the fish.

Nuts! Carp go crazy for 'em.

From my experience nuts can be highly effective baits for carp but they can also harm the fish if used incorrectly!

Unlike other carp baits, nuts seem to keep their appeal even after lots of fish have been caught on them. The reason why remains a bit of a mystery. I suppose they find them rather moreish, just like we do! From my experience i have found that i have more productive days in the warmer months using nuts, apposed to fishing in the winter and cold weather. Some people, however, may have caught fish on nuts and particles in the winter, but i just find it more effective when the suns out :)

 Nut safety rules!
Misused, nuts can cause fish to lose condition and even die! Too many anglers offering to many lose offerings (baiting up) of nuts can cause carp to become preoccupied with them to the exclusion of other food sources, resulting in the fish suffering vitamin deficiency. Uncooked (raw) or only partially cooked nuts, meanwhile, can swell inside a fishes gut, this can be fatal. These problems have led to nuts being banned on some fisheries. Where nuts are still allowed, no harm at all can come to the fish provided you don't use them by the bucket load and ONLY use fully cooked ones.

Buying and cooking nuts.
The most common and widely used nuts in fishing are tiger nuts. These have become a widely available bait with an impressive history of success, especially with specimen carp anglers! They can be brought ready prepared (cooked) now which saves you a lot of time and effort. Next- and, i believe are very over looked and as good as tiger nuts- are peanuts, especially the jumbo ones! These can be brought online, in pet stores and supermarkets. It should go without saying that it's the unroasted, unsalted ones you want. Less commonly used are hazelnuts, almonds and brazils. These can also be brought online or at your local supermarket but are a bit pricey for the amount you get. Anglers tend to use these mainly to overcome peanut and tiger nut bans, but if the venue has a ban on these you can bet your ass that they don't allow any nuts! You should ask the bailiff about nut bans before using them on the venue.
If preparing raw nuts yourself you should soak the nuts in a large saucepan for no less than 24 hours, then bring them to the boil and simmer for 20 mins when preparing peanuts and hazelnuts, 30 mins when preparing tiger nuts, almonds and brazils. Incidentally, don't expect tiger nuts to soften as much as the others- they remain quite hard however long you cook them.

Fishing with nuts.

The best way to present a nut hook bait is by a hair rig (see image), they must be drilled with a bait drill so the hair can be pulled through. Most cooked hazelnuts have almost neutral density, which makes them ideal for fishing over silt or weed. Some cooked hazelnuts actually float ; with the addition of a small piece of rig foam these can be fished pop-up style or even as a surface bait! Some anglers think carp have to be weaned on to nuts by regular or in some cases excessive prebaiting. In fact, carp take nuts enthusiastically from the outset. I usually catapult two or three pouches around each hook bait at the start of  a session, then top up with a further couple of pouches after each run. I forgot to mention almonds make it impossible to catapult out, so you can either fish the margins with them or add them to a ground bait or spod mix to get them out there! I hope this information was helpful and truly hope you get on the nuts and reap the rewards! Happy catching!!

Unbeatable GroundBait!!

    Hello again,
In this post i will be focusing on groundbait and its uses. Also how to mix properly and the best brands and deals available at the moment! First of all we should look at the basic essentials so you can get a good perspective of this magic dust. So.......

  •  WHAT IS GROUNDBAIT Groundbait is a very effective fish attractant and has been proven to stimulate most fish into a feeding frenzy. It contains ingredients such as bread crumb, fishmeal, Hemp-seed, vanilla- sugar, oils, bird-seed and maize etc. Other ingredients and attractants may be added to ground bait, like various liquid attractants and particals such as sweetcorn, pellets and even maggots!

  • HOW TO MIX GROUNDBAIT AND WHAT TO ADD.
Well i can't begin to explain how many brands are available out there, the list is endless. However, i can show you which ones i prefer to use and may i add iv'e had great success with these baits! these baits have been around a while and have become one of the most successful and recognized bait producers ever! Top anglers swear by them and so do i. The video below is a great mix to start off with, for open end feeder fishing for match fish, e.g Bream and roach. :) If you want to feed balls out by hand then you can add a little more water, so it doesn't break apart in the air or on impact.

These baits are used by top anglers all over the world and have been accountable for some of the biggest catch reports in the UK and Europe. I hope you put these methods to the test and improve your catch rate massively.

Thanks for droping by to check out my page. Feel free to leave comments I would appreciate any feedback.

Coarse fishing an enjoyable hobby for all.

Hello there,
so what is coarse fishing? Well in my opinion coarse fishing is the best sport on the planet and i say sport because it can be very competitive.

Coarse fishing consists of an angler fishing fresh water lakes and rivers for the various different species that inhabit these areas.  There is a vast amount of different species, but some of the most common in the UK and Europe are roach, rudd, dace, bream, perch, pike, zander, chub, barbel, carp and wells catfish. For anyone to be able to go fishing, they must have a valid rod licence. For adults 16+ it is £27 per year for coarse licence, 12-16 is £5 and under 12 is free. You can buy online or from your local post office. Make sure you get one because getting caught without one could result in a hefty fine of up to £2,500!! No one want's to get that, so full details can be found here Environment agency fishing licence info.

I have always been a keen angler, ever since i was a child and caught my first fish. I remember that day very well. I was five years old and fishing at my local lake with my older brother. It was a scorching hot summers day and i had a kids float rod set and a box of maggots that brother brought for me. It wasn't long before i had a bite and caught my first fish ever! It was a beautiful little perch a bit like this one below.

What my brother failed to tell me was the needle like spins along the back of this fish. Not forgetting this was my first fish and i was five i just thought it would be o.k to grab. But do you know that little sod spiked me good and proper and my brother was in hysterics. This however was a good lesson learned as i haven't done it since!

From that day forward i was hooked! I wanted to go all the time just for that rush of adrenalin you get when you hook a fish. I'm not sure if it's the excitement of how big the fish could be or what it could be that keeps me hooked. I think it's a bit of both. When i was a teenager i started studying fishing from various books and magazines and not just coarse fishing but sea fishing too. I wanted to learn as much as possible so i could have a bigger advantage of catching the most or biggest fish rather than sit there and watch other anglers totally smash it!
It has to be my number one way of unwinding and i'm sure it will be yours too. So if your not already fishing then give it a go, you will not be disappointed. I will be posting more helpful tips and bargain buys like the perfect pole starter kits below in a bid to get everyone hooked on fishing.
Pole fishing is an excellent way to start fishing as there is no reel involved and the tactics are very simple. As you are usually targeting smaller fish on pole tackle, the bites tend to happen fairly quickly so you are kept busy and start getting the feel for it. I would appreciate any feedback through comments and if you liked it please plus 1 me below.  Happy catching and speak soon :)
